Time to buy the Huskers

Warren Buffett is arguably the greatest investor of all-time. His philosophy is simple: 1) buy low and sell high, and 2) be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful. With the stock market suffering through the summer doldrums, it occurred to me that sports fans and investors have some things in common. Investors in general like stocks the most when the market is at a high and they don’t want anything to do with them when the market is in the dumps. Sports fans have basically the same attitude toward their team, liking them the most when their team is experiencing success and the least when their team is struggling. Granted, this analogy doesn't factor in the most loyal fans (and Nebraska has plenty) who never get off the bandwagon. But you get the point.

The guys over at BigRedNetwork (who are much more prolific writers than me) asked an interesting question, "Have you peaked as a Husker fan?" Personally, the answer is no way. That's tantamount to saying my best days in life are behind me. If there’s nothing to look forward to, then why continue living? Granted, the Huskers probably won’t win three titles in four years again, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be positive about the future. That doesn't mean we shouldn't anticipate every season like it's the very first one.

Look at it this way, for 40 years Nebraska football enjoyed a bull market. NU is in the top four of winningest Division One college football programs, which further displays the long term uptrend of success NU has enjoyed. The last few years have been rough on us Husker fans. While they don’t ring a bell at the bottom of a bear market in stocks, it’s fair to say the bottom for the Husker football program came with the dismissal of Bill Callahan after last season. But the 2008 season is nearly upon us with practice starting in a month. A new season...a chance to start over and to begin rebuilding what was once great. First year head coach, Bo Pelini, is the catalyst that Nebraska football needs to take their stock higher. After suffering through an ugly bear market, it’s time to begin a new bull. It’s time to buy the Huskers.

On the recruiting front, NU picked up a big quarterback commitment today, both literally and figuratively. Cody Green of Dayton, Texas committed to the Huskers after narrowing it down to Nebraska and Texas A&M. The 6'4" 220 pound QB is ranked 4 stars by Rivals.com and 5 stars by Scout.com.

Johnny Mitchell tied a school record in 1990 with seven touchdowns caught from the tight end position. He also holds the school record for most receptions by a tight end in a season at 31 in 1991 as well as most reeiving yards in a game 137 against Oklahoma in 1991. I didn\t find how many career touchdowns he had in college though. If you\re talking the pros, just Google \Johnny Mitchell\ touchdowns and you should be able to find that statistic.
